Pilates teacher V Pilates Instructor?

Updated: 5 days ago

The Difference Between a Pilates Teacher and an Instructor I was asked the other day, “What’s the correct term, Pilates teacher or instructor?” Good question! And, honestly, it got me thinking… Is there really a right answer, or does it come down to how you see yourself and your role with your clients? Maybe it’s a bit of both. A s a teacher trainer I see myself as a mixture of the above as well as an Educator. (and lifelong student!) In the world of Pilates, the terms "teacher" and "instructor" are often used interchangeably, but there are significant differences that influence their approach and impact on students. An instructor typically focuses on delivering exercises or demonstrating precise movements. Their role is to guide students through a structured sequence, offering clear, direct instructions on how to execute each exercise correctly. A teacher goes beyond instructing. A teacher looks at the broader picture, considering the unique needs, abilities, and nurturing the goals of the individual clients. We aim to give our clients a deeper understanding of their body, encouraging them to connect with their movement, explore their potential, and develop body awareness. Good teachers have a desire to inspire curiosity and facilitate personal growth. Both roles are valuable and have a place and a time, you may find you move between the two instinctively, instructing when your client only needs reminding of an exercise, teaching when they need more support and assistance. Lets face it, at the end of the day our aim is for our clients to be confident and capable of working on their own. because that’s when we know they are ready to progress to more complex movements and deepen their understanding. So I believe a Pilates teacher’s approach is holistic. We address not only the “how” of movement but also the “why,” empowering students to take ownership of their personal practice and continuing development. The distinction between teaching and instructing and being able to move between the two can profoundly shape the Pilates experience and our student’s long-term development. Now, does anyone use the term coach?
