Why Terminology Matters
Does it annoy you when someone gets your name wrong?
In Pilates It's not unusual to hear a Reformer being referred to as a "Bed". This suggests rest, relaxation ( and yes, other activities) However the Reformer and it's carriage are designed for work, movement, exercise. Pilates.
Within Pilates, as in any professional discipline, language matters. Using correct terminology isn’t being pedantic or "elitist; it’s about being precise, clear, safe and above all professional.
It builds trust. When we use the correct names for movements, muscles, and concepts, we show our depth of knowledge. It tells clients and students, “You’re in safe, educated hands.”
It keeps everyone on the same page. Whether you’re cueing a client, mentoring a teacher, or presenting at a conference, shared terminology avoids confusion.
It protects the method. Pilates has a rich vocabulary rooted in its history. Using terms correctly helps preserve the integrity of the work and respects the lineage we’re part of.
It enhances learning. When students learn the right terms from the start, they become better teachers. They can communicate more clearly, cue more effectively, and understand anatomy and movement on a deeper level.
It supports safety. Inaccurate terminology can lead to poor execution or even injury. Calling something the wrong name may cause someone to perform it incorrectly—or teach it incorrectly.
Getting terminology right isn’t about showing off—it’s about showing up professionally.
